I wanted to start off some recipes, and why not start off with a classic dish, Salisbury Steak! If you know me, you know I love to cook, however I never made my own Salisbury steak until now. I did some research to see what key ingredients I needed to start with then I started making my grocery list. By the way, having your groceries delivered to your front door, yes please!! All the items needed to make a tasty dinner, check! Let’s do this.
I start by laying out my tools and ingredients on the kitchen bar. In a large bowl I mixed one pound of lean ground beef, a fourth of a cup of panko bread crumbs, two teaspoons of ketchup, one teaspoon of dijon mustard, one teaspoon of salt, and a half teaspoon of dried oregano. I then took a large egg and whisked it a separate bowl and after added it to the mixture.
Once all the ingredients are together, with your hands knead the mixture until it is well combined. Now make four equal sized oval patties, approximately 3/4 of an inch thick .
Take one tablespoon of olive oil and put it in a skillet with the temperature set on medium high. Add your patties to the skillet and cook them approximately three minutes on each side (until they get a nice golden crust). If the seem to be browning too much, just lower your heart. Once you are happy how they look, transfer them to a plate and set to the side.
Next, using the same skillet, turn down your temperature to medium and add two tablespoons of butter. Once that melts, add in two tablespoons of flour and whisk until there are no lumps remaining. Now lower your temperature to medium-low and add one and a half cups of beef stock and continue to whisk. Then add one tablespoon of ketchup, one teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce, and half a teaspoon of onion powder. Give it a good whisking before adding in six ounces of mushrooms (I used baby bella). Let this simmer for about five minutes and add salt and pepper for taste.
Grab your plated patties and add them back into the skillet, making sure to nestle them in the gravy and cover with a lid. Cook for about ten minutes or until you reach an internal temperature of 160°. I went with homemade redskin mashed potatoes for the side dish, but the possibilities are endless.
Well there you go, a hearty home cooked meal. I hope you all enjoyed and hopefully will try out the recipe for yourself, and maybe even make it your own! I will add an ingredient list below. Thanks for visiting!
Salisbury Steak
Ingredients
The Steak
1 pound lean ground beef
1/4 cup panko breadcrumbs
1 large egg
2 teaspoons ketchup
1 teaspoon dijon mustard
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
The Gravy
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 tablespoons flour
1 1/2 cups beef stock
1 tablespoon ketchup
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
6 ounces sliced cremini mushrooms
Salt and pepper (, to taste)
Directions
In a large bowl, mix together the ingredients for the steaks (except the oil) until combined.
Shape the mixture into 4 equal oval patties, approximately 3/4-inch thick.
In a large nonstick skillet, warm the olive oil over medium-high heat; add the steaks & cook for about 3 minutes per side until they get a nice golden crust (if they are browning too fast, reduce your heat). Once done, transfer them to a plate.
Reduce the heat to medium & in the same skillet with the drippings, add butter. Once the butter is melted, add in the flour & whisk until combined and no lumps remain.
Reduce heat to medium-low & pour in the beef stock, whisking well. Add in the ketchup, Worcestershire, onion powder, whisking to combine.
Add in the mushrooms, then simmer for about 5 minutes to thicken. Season with salt & pepper.
Add the steak parties back to the skillet & nestle them into the gravy; cover & cook another 10 minutes until cooked through (with an internal temperature of 160 degrees F.)
