On the morning of the 19th of February we made a impromptu decision to go outside and find a waterfall to enjoy! That’s one of the amazing things about the area that we live in, there are so many fantastic places to visit within 1-1 1/2 hours of home. After a few minutes of discussing our options, we chose to head to Greeneville and visit Margarette Falls.
After an hour drive we find ourselves in the parking lot for the trailhead. There was one other car with the person sitting in their car. You know what that means, we have the place to ourselves!! We load up, put Aurelia in the front pack and away we went. Immediately the flashbacks of previous trips here come to mind and a smile appears on our faces.
The first .5-mile section of this trail is an easy hike on a closed Forest Service road. Shortly after leaving the road the trail forks, bear left and travel along Dry Creek .7 miles to the waterfall. This section of the trail is moderately difficult and crosses the stream a little over half way. The crossing isn’t too bad, as there are rocks placed for you to use to cross, or you can just wear waterproof boots and socks (that’s what I did). Andrea carried Aurelia across without any issues.
A few minutes after crossing the stream, we could hear the falls ahead… WOAH!! With the recent rains we’ve had, the water was flowing beautifully over the edge and down the cliff facing. We took advantage and snapped a handful of pictures and a few videos. This place is a MUST visit for anyone that has not been before. I’ve been to a handful of waterfalls in my time, and this one sits near the top of favorite waterfall hikes. The 2.4-mile out-and-back trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. The trail can get very busy, we counted 15 vehicles when we got back to parking, so early morning would be the best time to go. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash. I will include some links and a map below. Enjoy!!
These are the socks that both Andrea and I use. They will keep your feet dry and warm. If you find yourself going places where your feet get wet, these are a must have.
Great spot, great pics, great commentary! 👏👏👏
